School earns national honor for performance

SHADYSIDE – Jefferson Elementary located in Shadyside has received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award. Jefferson was one out of 14, both public and private, schools in Ohio to receive this award.

It’s been a great experience for myself but a very exciting time for our building seeing that the teachers and staffs hard work,” said Principal Cynthia Caldwell, who is going into her eighth year as principal. “The students hard work is really paying off as far as what the students is doing in the classroom in math and reading.”

The award came to Jefferson Elementary after the students performance of the last five or six years has been at a very high level. Caldwell received at letter and an application to apply.

The application was broken down into several parts based on subject matter. Some of the subject matter includes math, reading, parent/ community partnership and extracurricular activities.

“I applied for it in February and we were very fortunate to have received the award and (I) had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. last week with 300 other schools that nationally have received awards all public, private and charter schools.” said Caldwell.

Though Jefferson received this award, they are not done. Third grade test are dissected every year to see what are the students strengths and weakness and how the school can improve the math and reading curriculum based on the students scores to see what needs to be taught so that the students will continue to hit his or her target and meet the standard for the state.

The U.S. Department of Education created the National Blue Ribbon school award in 1982 to honor the most successful private and public schools. In the 30 years since its creation, over 7,000 schools across America has received this award.

“I think it’s our attention to students, ensuring that each student gets what they need academically, socially and emotionally. When you focus on individual needs you get great results,” said Caldwell. “We are extremely proud of out students in this accomplishment and equally as proud of out staff for their dedication to the success of our school.”
