Heagney hurls Tigers to win with 17 Ks

NEW MARTINSVILLE — Megan Heagney struck out 17 and singled three times in leading Shadyside to an impressive 4-1 triumph over homestanding Magnolia Friday afternoon in softball action.

Heagney’s three singles produced a run for Jillian Ongley’s undefeated Lady Tigers (3-0).

Angelina McKeever slugged a single and double that chased in a run, while Shelby Benedetta singled twice.

Heagney walked two and scattered four hits.

Shadyside is idle until Monday when it hosts fellow unbeaten St. John Central at 5 p.m.

At St. Joe, the Lady Reds made it eight in a row with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Seminoles on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

In the opener, Megan Ging fired a 3-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks. She also singled twice.

Taylar Canter drove in a trio of runs with two singles. Dallas Messenger singled three times, while Elisha Gillespie knocked in a pair of runs with a single and double. Mackenzie Conroy and Morgan Runyan each had 2-run singles.

In the nightcap, Bellaire overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit to win going away.

Canter singled and tripled to plate a run. Mary Garloch and Runyan each had two singles and two RBI.

Ging relieved Arianne Maupin in the first and struck out six.

Bellaire visits Linsly today for a twinbill at 1 p.m.

St. John Central 10, Cameron 0

At Wheeling, the Irish (5-0) rode the 3-hit pitching of junior all-stater Hanna Absalom in blanking the Dragons in five frames.

Absalom struck out a baker’s dozen and didn’t walk a batter. She has yet to allow an earned run and has struck out 58 hitters so far.

Sydney Helms singled and tripled to account for three RBI. Absalom added a single and double. Cheyenne Harris singled twice to drive in a run and natalie Cervelli delivered a 2-run double.

The Irish host Conotton Valley today in a doubleheader at the I-470 Complex.

Bridgeport 2, Madonna 0

At Weirton, Ashley Hadzima fired a 6-hitter and fanned 10 as the Bulldogs improved to 5-1.

Caitlyn Kroll drove in Dustyne Cargnell in the first inning with what turned out to be the game-winner. Emily Nowakowski added a run-scoring double in the fourth.

Cargnell singled twice and Hadzima tripled.

At Beallsville, the Pilots are now 5-2 after a twinbill sweep of the host Blue Devils.

Gaby Goudy and Rosie Romick combined on a 4-hitter in the first game as Goudy fanned six and Romick four.

Maddie taylor knocked in three runs with two singles. Haylee Bowers added two singles and a double that plated two runs. Mikayla Cieszeski had two doubles and a single for an RBI. Rachel Hutchison singled twice to drive in a run and Mackenzie Marshall had a 2-run double.

In the nightcap, Monica Curtis fashioned a 1-hitter with eight Ks and a walk.

Bowers slugged a double and home run that were good for two RBI. Marshall had a pair of two-baggers and an RBI. Romick singled twice to drive in a pair, while Cieszeski singled and doubled to plate two runs. Hutchison had two singles and an RBI.

River travels to Beverly today for two games with Fort Frye.

Harrison Central 6, Oak Glen 3

At Cadiz, the Huskies (2-1) received three singles, a double and two RBI from Katie Ellzy, who also fanned six and walked three in tossing a 4-hitter at Sally Buffalo Park.

Shianne Bameth homered and singled twice to knock in two runs. Roni Caldwell had two singles and a run batted in. Katie Parkinson singled in another run.

Harrison Central treks to Lisbon today to meet Beaver Local.

Edison 8, Martins Ferry 4

At Martins Ferry, the Wildcats (2-3) received a grand slam and double from Molly McCoy in defeating the Purple Riders (2-3).

Katie Webb slugged a 3-run roundtripper for the Riders in the first inning. Addie Suriano had two singles.

Both teams had five errors.

Barnesville 14, Caldwell 1

At Barnesville, Paige Gibbons cracked a grand slam and a solo homer as the Shamrocks (2-3) rolled past the Redskins (1-4).

Lane Hanlon added two triples and a pair of RBI. Becky Burkhart singled and drove a 2-run homer, while Marrissa Burga singled twice.

Blair Thompson chipped in a run-scoring triple.

Barnesville is at Buckeye Trail for two games today.

At Weir, the Crusaders (4-1) dropped their first game of the year as they made four errors.
