Shadyside talks levy

SHADYSIDE – Shadyside Local School District’s Board of Education met Wednesday to discuss the upcoming levy, as presented by Superintendent John Haswell.

A brochure has been produced regarding the levy, accompanied by a new website. Anybody who has questions about the financial implications of the levy can go to to see how much the levy will cost per month and even per year.

The district has already suffered a loss of revenue and has made cutbacks. Positions left open by retired teachers have gone on unfilled, and the superintendent and principal position were combined to save money.

According to Haswell, he has held two previous town hall meetings to discuss the need for a levy, but he said the turnout was disappointing. He plans to try to hold one more meeting in October.

Haswell also acknowledged community service performed by high school student Kaitlyn Krock. Krock has been volunteering to take photos at athletic events and uploading the photos to the school website.

Students and parents can take note that progress reports will be sent out this Monday, marking the end of the first half of the nine-week grading period.

The board accepted a grant allotted to provide iPads for students in the developmentally disabled program. Several months ago, the board of Developmental Disabilities had already purchased iPads before the grant was approved. These iPads will be re-distributed throughout the district.

The Shadyside Sports Foundation has supplied a new public address system to the school’s athletic field. The previous PA system was only 70 watts, dwarfed by comparison to the new 4,000- watt system. The school building also received a new PA system, thanks to the chamber of commerce.

The board also approved the following:

– Jason Newell as a PM custodian at the high school

– Suzanne Persinger as a preschool aide at Jefferson Elementary

– Christy Schwertfeger as a Special Education aide at Jefferson Elementary

– A one-year leave of absence for preschool aide Kim Heller.
